The artists of Tjarlirli & Kaltukatjara Art are a multigenerational group who live and work from Tjukurla in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in Western Australia, and Kaltukatjara (Docker River), Pitjantjatjara country in Northern Territory.
Since 2020, this artist group has been practicing silk painting. This medium has unlocked new possibilities in the expression on stories and culture while retaining recognisable elements of the Western Desert Art movement; in particular the striking use of powerful, vibrant colours. The quality of movement or aliveness which is present in the silk and its inherent connection with pirriya (breeze) was a central point of inspiration for the collection. The expansion of these silk works into the wearable forms within the Pirriya collection carries their ‘aliveness’ further into a new dimension showcasing Ngaanyatjarra & Pitjantjatjara culture in a new form.
